(Heads up, my TLDR about the post I was going to write became the post. So TLDR the TLDR: Help. https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/#)
I’ll put the TLDR; here up top to save everyone trouble: I don’t know how else to explain to you that you should care about other people other than that you should, and that you should not be quiet or try to rationalize or butwhatabout when black people like George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery and countless, countless others continue to be murdered for existing.
It certainly didn’t take the following experience for me to learn any of this, but it’s worth noting for the example: My brother was jailed again recently after violating parole and fleeing arrest. Based on the nature of the incident I’m Purell-killing-germs levels of certain he would be either maimed or dead right now if he were a black man. Before that, he had a string of offenses that landed him relatively short sentences that almost certainly would have resulted in long term incarceration for a black man in that same community. And so even he, a mentally-ill kid from poverty-stricken roots who’s been trapped in a corrupt correctional system that has set him up to fail over and over, for years, because of his sickness and his poorness, benefits constantly from white privilege–just like I do and yes, just like you do, if you’re white.
It’s your responsibility to educate yourself, to speak up and stand up, to VOTE for people who will sincerely work to challenge and dismantle systemic racism, police brutality, and other social issues that disproportionately target and affect black people and PoC, and to actively correct and challenge other white people to check their privilege when they participate or are complicit in othering black people and PoC.

…You know what, that doesn’t matter right now. Black lives do. I’ll write about it later. For now, please go do something.
